Aizuri-e - Literally "blue print," aizuri-e are prints that are predominately blue in color. Aizuri-e became popular in the 1820s with the introduction in Japan of Prussian blue pigment from Europe. The new pigment was brighter and more lightfast than natural blue dyes from indigo or dayflower, and its use in creating woodblock prints became fashionable and commercially successful. These prints are from a small group of aizuri-e nature scenes, rendered with bold brushwork.
