Comments - Fantastic image of the famous race across the water at the Battle of Uji River, when three of Minamoto no Yoshitsune's generals fought to see who could reach the opposite shore and engage the enemy first. At left, Sasaki Shiro Takatsuna slices through an arrow above his head with his sword as he rides through the deep water. In the center, Kajiwara Genda Kagesue looks back over his shoulder, his bow tucked beneath his arm. He wears a helmet topped with deer antlers, and his personal standard rises above his back. At right, Hatakeyama Shigetada shoulders his horse as he leads the animal through the swiftly moving current, another general swimming alongside him. Other men can be seen swimming behind them. A great illustration of this historic incident, wonderfully detailed.
