Fashionable Lifelike Dolls: Tanmeijiro Genshogo Fighting Underwater, 1856

Comments - Dramatic scene from the classic tale "Suikoden" of an underwater fight between the tattooed Tanmeijiro Genshogo and General Ko. Fully dressed in flowing robes and helmet, the general struggles to free himself from the grip of his opponent. The pair plunges downward into the water, a pair of fish swimming by. A terrific woodblock with a dynamic composition. This interesting and unusual subject was based on a group of "dolls" on display at Kannon Temple in Asakusa. The dolls were actually very realistic, life-sized figures dressed in real clothes. An excellent subject for a collector interested in the samurai tradition.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 9 3/4" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. A few wormholes, repaired. Slight toning and soiling, a few creases, slight rubbing at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
