47 Ronin, Act 9: Yuranosuke’s Country Retreat in Yamashina

Series; Kanadehon Chushingura, 1862

47 Ronin, Act 9: Yuranosuke’s Country Retreat in Yamashina - Handsome scene from Act 9 of the "Kanadehon Chushingura" showing the lovely young Konami about to be killed by her mother Tonase. When her daughter was rejected as a bride for Rikiya because a bribe by Konami's father, Honzo, allegedly led to Lord Hangan's death, Tonase vowed to kill herself and her daughter in atonement. As she prepares to strike the blow, the sound of a wandering monk playing the flute outside can be heard. The monk is actually Honzo himself, and he will goad Rikiya into killing him to save his family's honor. Here, Konami kneels with her hands clasped in prayer, while Honzo is hidden beneath his basket hat at lower left. In the snowy courtyard at upper right, Rikiya stretches a rope between his hands. A nicely detailed setting.
