Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Prince Genji and Eavesdroppers, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Handsome scene of Prince Genji and a young beauty realizing that they are being spied upon. At left, the young nobleman pushes aside a curtain as he kneels on the black lacquer stairs, smiling with amusement. The beauty in the center gasps and hides her chin behind her sleeve, recoiling away from the open doorway. Outside, a matron and a princess in a violet kimono with a phoenix on it eavesdrop on the couple, the older woman scowling unhappily. The room is attractively decorated, with walls featuring a scene of trees and golden clouds, a metal lantern hanging overhead, and blue panels with bird motifs at right. An interesting subject, nicely detailed.
