Travelers Stopping at a Signpost

Comments - Great kabuki scene of three travelers stopping for a break at a signpost. The fellow at left looks down with an expression of intense anger as he holds a money purse in one hand, his other holding the cords of the woven hat hanging over his back. His blue and white coat features a bold crosshatch pattern with a strange flap of red plaid fabric hanging in front. At right, an enraged elderly man stares back at him, his long white hair pulled into a knot over his shoulders. One sleeve of his outer kimono is pushed down to the waist, revealing and upper body tattoo of a flower cart. The third fellow eyes him suspiciously as he crouches before him, his hand on the hilt of his sword, ready to draw his weapon. A river runs along the base of the mountain at left, with the rooftops of a village nestled below the pine trees near the top. An intriguing subject with large expressive figures, detailed with embossing in the white hair.
