Evening at New Years

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of three people out for an evening stroll at New Year's. At left, Iwai Shijaku I plays the waitress Oyama, who grins happily as she holds up a collapsible paper lantern. Her two companions are each holding onto one end of a parcel wrapped in brocade cloth. The fellow in the center scowls at the beauty angrily while adjusting a dotted towel draped over his neck. At right, Ichimura Uzaemon XII as Isami Jirokichi watches with furrowed brows, carrying a traditional holiday decoration of a branch decorated with a turnip, a mask of Okame, and a die over his shoulder. The rooftops of the city spread out behind them, with a willow tree framing the darkening sky. Nice expressive figures with bokashi shading in the background.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 29 1/2" x 14"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Three separate panels. A number of small wormholes at edges repaired. Some light toning at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
