Comments - A fantastic Chikanobu triptych depicting President Ulysses S Grant and his wife Julia visiting Japan in 1879. After leaving office in 1877, President Grant embarked on a world tour the started in Liverpool and brought him at last to Japan, before returning to the United Sates. This image shows the spectacular festival held in Ueno Park in honor of Grant's visit and which the Japanese Emperor attended. Fireworks explode overhead while swordsmen spar and two men on horseback perform for the entertainment of the assembled dignitaries. A terrific and rare subject - we've never before offered this print.
