Original Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892) Japanese Woodblock Print
Pensive Beauty, 1862

Comments - Expressive kabuki portrait from an early Yoshitoshi series depicting actors against backgrounds with assorted scripts for joruri or ballad dramas, which feature a chanted narrative accompanied by the shamisen. Here, a beauty bows her head with a pensive expression, her sleeves folded across her chest, lost in her thoughts. She wears a solid colored kimono with a black collar over a red under robe, a blue towel draped over one shoulder. Her hair is pulled back into a smooth bun, adorned with a comb, a few ribbons, and a metal hairpin. Text panels are set diagonally across the background. A poignant image, nicely detailed with fine line work in the hair. This is only the second print we've seen from this rare series.

Artist - Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892)

Image Size - 13 3/8" x 9 1/2"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Vertical crease near center. Some rubbing, soiling and creases. Some toning. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
