Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Visitors at a Garden Gate. 1864

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene of a couple standing outside a garden gate at left, the beauty looking up at her companion with a sly smile. Inside the shabby house with cracked and missing plaster on the walls, an older man watches the visitor with a worried expression, his lips tightly compressed, his thinning hair pulled back into a slender topknot. At right, a beauty plays the shamisen, while the man behind her looks up with an astonished expression, a cup of sake in his hand. The left panel features Ichimura Uzaemon XIII, and the center panel includes Bando Mitsugoro VI and Ichikawa Kodanji IV. Nice expressive figures in an interesting setting.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 28 5/8" + top margin as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three attached panels, backed with paper. Vertical fold near left edge of left panel, a few creases, slight soiling, light stain. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
