Hiroshige (1797 - 1858) Japanese Woodblock Reprint
Cherry Blossoms at Night along the Sumida Embankment

Publisher - Adachi from a rare series of Edo masterwork designs. Adachi publisher seal in margin or on reverse.

Adachi was one of the most respected publishers of the 20th century. Their woodblocks were printed to the highest standards with excellent color and fine detail. Founded in 1925, Adachi also chose interesting and varied subjects for their prints and was the only publisher of many famous old ukiyo-e images.

Comments - Beautiful image of three women walking along the Sumida River embankment at night. The beauty at left carries a lantern on a pole and packages tied to a cord. She smiles as she looks back at her companions, the woman at right waving a greeting as she approaches. Behind them, a blossoming cherry tree is silhouetted in gray against the evening sky, just a few boats on the water below. Lighted windows glow from the buildings on the opposite shore, and stars above. A lovely design with fine detail and soft bokashi shading, one we've never seen in reprint before.

Artist - Hiroshige (1797 - 1858)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 29 3/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. A few faint creases. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
