Arresting a Commoner

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of a guard trying to arrest a commoner, who grabs hold of his truncheon over his shoulder. The man looks to the side with a sorrowful expression, his eyes wide. He has a scar on his forehead, and the loose hairs at the side of his face give him a disheveled appearance. His blue plaid kimono is edged with a black and white check, tied with a striped obi. Above, a pine tree in dark silhouette frames the night sky. The title cartouche at upper right takes the form of a book. A poignant, expressive figure, nicely detailed with fine line work in the hair and kimono pattern, and a dusting of mica across the top of the sky.

Artist - Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 9 5/8"
