The Great Battle of Yamazaki, 1865

Comments - Terrific scene from the great Battle of Yamazaki in 1582 in which Toyotomi Hideyoshi defeated Akechi Mitsuhide, who had seized power by forcing the great leader Oda Nobunaga to commit suicide. Here the battle rages with two samurai on horseback galloping at each other head on. The warrior on the black horse at left grips his spear with both hands, striking an enemy on the ground alongside the neck. The rider's interesting personal standard of a hat decorated with fluttering papers and streamers waves overhead. The enemy approaching on a brown horse glares at him, drawing back his sword as he charges. Other warriors battle on foot, with wounded soldiers trampled on the ground below. A great Yoshitoshi depiction of this historic battle, with lively color.
