Usugumo: Minamoto Yorimitsu, 1855 - An incredible Kuniyoshi scene from the story of Minamoto no Yorimitsu (called Raiko) and the tsuchigumo or earth spider. Raiko fell ill with a fever and dreamed of an earth spider preparing to cast a web over him. He struck at it with his sword and immediately recovered from his fever. Here, the warrior sits up in his bed, grabbing his sword as the enormous spider drapes a gray web over him. The hideous creatures stares ahead with glowing yellow eyes, its face and head bristling with hair as it stretches the delicate web across Raiko and his heavy quilts. A fantastic illustration of this legendary event and a terrific supernatural subject.
