Nobleman Traveling at Night, 1862

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a nobleman traveling at night, one servant holding an umbrella over him while the other crouches beside a large lantern bearing the nobleman's crest. He frowns slightly as he looks over at the samurai kneeling at left, who scowls back at him, his hands clasped before him. At right, a young warrior handily twists the arm of a commoner behind his back, the youth grinning as he does so. He wears a blue coat over a print kimono tied with a narrow red sash over a white obi. In the distance, castle towers are silhouetted in black shadow as a few raindrops fall though the dark sky. From left, the actors are Nakamura Shikan IV, Kawarazaki Gonjuro I, and Iwai Kumesaburo III. Nice expressive figures with an atmospheric setting.
