Confrontation on the Stairs, 1863

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene of two samurai facing off on the stone stairs beneath a maple tree. At left, Kawarazaki Gonjuro appears as Endo Musha Morito, who scowls angrily as he leans forward. At right, Bando Hikosaburo plays Watanabe Saemon, who calmly tucks up the hem of his kimono in preparation for a fight. He wears a light green kamishimo patterned with daisies over a plum-colored robe, his two swords at his side. Colorful autumn leaves fall down over the scene. Nice expressive figures in an interesting setting.

Artist - Yoshiiku (1833 - 1904)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 19 3/8" + margins as shown
