Original Chikanobu (1838 - 1912) Japanese Woodblock Print
Moon Viewing, 1896

Comments - Lovely seen of beauties viewing the full moon and enjoying the evening air in a garden. A young woman relaxes on a bamboo bench covered with a red floral cloth at right. In the center, a beauty smiles as she looks over her shoulder, the breeze blowing her robe. Her light gray kimono features large floral motifs, including peonies, chrysanthemums, and cherry blossoms, worn over a red under robe and tied with a geometric print obi. At left, a woman carries a wicker basket as she strolls along, steps leading to the thatched-roof pavilion atop the cliff at left. A bridge crosses over a river meandering through the background, with just the tips of the trees along the horizon in dark silhouette. A charming design we've never come across before.
