Westerners in Yokohama

Comments - Interesting scene of Westerners in Yokohoma. At left, a woman wearing a full skirt, a fringed shawl, and a ruffled bonnet emerges from a palanquin with her husband standing nearby. He wears a double-breasted long green jacket over white pants, and a cap with a visor. A crowd of locals has gathered in the street behind them, watching the strangers from a respectful distance. At far right, a young boy in a blue plaid kimono leans into his mother, grasping her hand as if frightened. The large department store Echigoya lines the street on either side, the blue curtains bearing the store's crest and clerks peering out from a doorway at right. A terrific and unusual Yokohama-e depiction of Japanese interaction with foreigners.
