Comments - Hokkei's Romance of the Three Kingdoms - Fantastic image from Hokkei's series illustrating the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms," a historical novel written about the three warring kingdoms in third century China. These terrific designs feature battling warriors, hunters returning with the day's catch, scholars and noblemen going about their daily lives, and many of the literally hundreds of characters featured in this dramatic tale. Hokkei was one of Hokusai's most successful students, and these images are beautifully drawn with an exceptional attention to detail and fine line work. The expressive figures and exotic costumes and weapons bring this incredible story to life, enhanced with subtle color and dynamic compositions. "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" is considered a masterpiece of classic Chinese literature, and the turbulent tale of feudal life made a terrific subject for Japanese woodblock artists. A great choice for a collector interested this timeless novel.
