Series; Eight Scenes of Cherry Blossoms
Chion-in Temple Gate, 1935 - Impressive view of the entrance gate to the famous Chion-in Temple in Kyoto, the head temple of the Jodo or Pure Land sect of Buddhism, with the steep perspective adding dramatic impact. Visitors make their way up the stone steps framed by blossoming cherry trees, the large gate towering over the figures. Small votive prayer slips called "senja fuda" or "thousand shrine slips" are pasted up along the pillars and beams of the gate, a wonderful detail. A beautiful image and a lifetime Hiroshi Yoshida woodblock, marked with the jizuri seal in the left margin, meaning "self-printed." The jizuri seal appears only on original prints of the highest quality.
