Comments - Intriguing illustration of the Tokaido board game scene from the kabuki play "Koi Nyobo Somewake Tazuna." Here, a young packhorse driver named Sankichi has been invited into the Yurugi home to show them how to play sugoroku in an attempt to lift the spirits of the young Princess Shirabe. Sugoroku is a dice game similar to snakes and ladders that was popular with both adults and children. Sankichi has just thrown a die across the woodblock print game board spread out on the floor, this one featuring the stations of the Tokaido Road. At right, an elderly samurai leans forward, adjusting his eyeglasses as he peers at the game. The young princess sits on a cushion behind him, smiling happily as she watches the pair, surrounded by ladies-in-waiting. At left, a woman carries in a tray full of sweets for the players. Beautiful detail in the elegant fabrics, interior setting, and furnishings, with burnishing in the black kimono and lacquer trim. A terrific image depicting a favorite pastime.
