Series; Yoshitoshi's Courageous Warriors

Hojo Tokimasa Praying to a Goddess in the Sea, 1883 - Fantastic portrait of the warrior Hojo Tokimasa kneeling at the edge of a rocky cliff, praying to a goddess in the sea. The deity appears above the water, the curving waves framing the vision and echoing the shape of the sashes fluttering about the figure. The goddess stands serenely with a sacred jewel in one hand, a halo glowing softly behind her head. Dressed in armor and a black court cap, Tokimasa raises a folding fan as he humbly bows, leaning forward on his knees. A striking composition conveying a sense of majesty and power, beautifully colored and detailed with touches of burnishing and a dusting of mica in the wave. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art has this image in its collection.
