Genpuku by Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Genpuku

Series; Images from Auspicious Days in the Floral Calendar, circa 1844

Genpuku - Interesting portrait from a rarely seen Toyokuni III series pairing beauties with lucky days in the annual calendar. Here, a beauty wipes her face with a cloth as she looks into a hand mirror, her blackened teeth indicating her married status. She wears a black and brown checked kimono with a black collar over a red under robe with a gray floral print collar. Her hair is pulled back into a smooth bun, adorned with a lacquer comb, a few hairpins, and a red tie-dyed ribbon. The auspicious date for this print is Genpuku, the traditional coming-of-age ceremony for young male members of the samurai class. Nicely detailed with fine line work in the hair and soft shading in the background.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/2" x 9 7/8"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Backed with paper. A few small holes, repaired. Slight soiling and creasing, slight rubbing. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
