Comments - Dramatic depiction of the death of Officer Murata at Kagoshima during the Satsuma Rebellion. Leader Saigo Takamori's second-in-command, the brave warrior stands his ground in the center under fire by Japanese troops, gripping a spear, with one foot resting atop his fallen horse. His armor is dripping with blood from many wounds, but he stares ahead defiantly, the wild blowing his hair and beard. At right, rebels rush forward with General Saigo riding a white horse and wearing a plumed hat. At lower left, wounded and dying men litter the ground, while above, a Japanese officer raises his sword high at left under a billowing Japanese flag amidst clouds of smoke. A fantastic image from this historic conflict, with fine realistic figures and soft shading in the sky and clouds. Includes touches of burnishing. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art has this image in its collection.
