Iwafuji Berating Onoe, 1852

Comments - Terrific scene from the kabuki play commonly known as "Kagamiyama." The jealous senior lady-in-waiting, Iwafuji, has plotted the downfall of her junior, Onoe, by exchanging a sandal for a valuable statue in Onoe's care. Here, Iwafuji creates a scene after "discovering" the zori sandal in place of the statue. She holds the sandal threateningly over her head, glaring angrily at Onoe, who kneels quietly at left. From left, the actors are Onoe Kikujiro II as Onoe and Sawamura Chojuro V as Iwafuji. A great illustration from this well-known play with fine detail in the elegant interior setting and the kimono fabrics, including a burnished geometric pattern in the Iwafuji's black kimono.
