Lovers Oshun and Dembei, 1854

Comments - Terrific scene from the kabuki play commonly known as "Horikawa," which tells the story of a former courtesan, Oshun, and her lover, the murderer Dembei, who decide to commit suicide together rather than be parted. The couple meets in the home of her impoverished mother, who earns a meager living teaching songs while her brother trains monkeys. The mother kneels on the floor with a shamisen across her lap, tugging on Oshun's woven hat, not wanting her to leave. She looks over her shoulder at Dembei with a pleading expression. Oshun smiles coyly at her lover, but Dembei looks down unhappily. At right, Oshun's little sister plays with one of the monkeys, which wears a kimono and dances about. The walls of the shabby house are cracked and the shoji windows torn. A poignant image with wonderful interaction between the figures and fine detail in the household setting.
