Watching Enemy Troops from a Drum Tower, 1892

Comments - Great kabuki scene of two men in a drum tower watching enemy troops in the distance. Red orange flames and smoke rise from a bonfire up into the night sky, and a row of standards and banners is visible along the edge of a hill. The samurai in the center stares ahead with eyes wide, one hand wrapped around a wooden post and the other holding a drumstick. The agitated monk at right looks up at him with a worried expression, throwing his hand out before him. Blue and white draperies patterned with the three hollyhock leaf crest of the Tokugawa clan are wrapped around the top of the tower. A bold, dramatic composition, with large expressive figures and fine shading in the background.
