Setsubun Banquet, 1853

Comments - Terrific image of a group enjoying a banquet during the festival of Setsubun in February, which takes place just before the first day of spring. At upper left, a man scatters roasted soybeans across the floor to chase away evil spirits and to welcome in good luck and prosperity for the New Year. The young boy in the center hurries forward to gather them up and eat them to encourage good luck. At right, a young man pours a cup of sake for a seated beauty, who smiles as she watches the soybeans fly. A large red lacquer tray on the floor holds a large platter of sushi, small dishes, and a black lacquer container. Two golden carp figurines rest on a piece of wood nearby. The room opens onto the garden, with a dipper resting across a water basin at right, and a blossoming plum tree framing the night sky. A great design with wonderful color and detail.
