Ghost of Oiran Tamagiku

Comments - Terrific diptych from a famous kabuki play which tells the tale of a young samurai in love with a high-ranking courtesan, Tamagiku, whom he ends up murdering. She appears to him as a ghost, emanating in a cloud of smoke from a hanging floral lantern. She looks over her shoulder at him with a reproachful expression as he recoils from the sight. The beauty's kimono is shaded from blue to gray with a border of flowers, worn over a red under robe. Her hands are tucked up next to her face from beneath the red robe. The man at left leans back in surprise, dressed in a sheer black coat over a blue kimono patterned with brown and white blossoms. A tobacco set and a poem slip rest on the floor nearby. A great supernatural image.

Artist - Yoshiiku (1833 - 1904)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 19 1/4"
