Nakamura Utaemon IV as Yaoya Hanbei

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene depicting "ningyoburi," a style of acting imitating the exaggerated motions of puppets. Nakamura Utaemon IV appears as the greengrocer (Yaoya) Hanbei, striking a rather stilted pose balancing on one foot, tilting his head upwards. He stands in front of a street lined with warehouses. A puppeteer dressed in black kneels at left, supporting the illusion of manipulating the performer as a puppet. A great illustration of this unusual kabuki performance, nicely detailed, with fine bokashi shading in the night sky.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 9 3/4"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. A few holes and thinning spots, repaired. Slight toning and soiling, a few creases and spots. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
