Series; Titles of Dance Descriptions
Titles of Dance Descriptions - Designed between 1856 and 1858, Toyokuni III's large series "Titles of Dance Descriptions" presents scenes from a variety of kabuki plays, including some from performances a few years prior to publication. Each includes expressive figures in nicely detailed settings, and some feature deluxe treatments such as burnishing or embossing. The title cartouche take the form of two overlapping books, with text featuring the name of the play, the date of the performance, and the roles. These handsome designs are seldom seen, and are a nice choice for a kabuki enthusiast or Toyokuni III collector.
Shihei and Samurai Triplets, 1857 - Terrific scene from the classic kabuki play "Sugawara denju tenarai kagami," featuring Nakamura Denkuro II, Sawamura Sojuro III, Nakamura Torazo, and Ichikawa Omezo I in the roles of Umeomaru, Sakuramaru, Matsuomaru, and Shihei. The triplet brothers become the victims of divided loyalties following the treacherous downfall of their sponsor, Sugawara, at the hands of Matsuomaru's employer, Shihei. Here, the evil Shihei rages from atop a carriage outside his palace, waving a wooden staff of office, his face blue and tongue sticking out. He wears an elegant embossed yellow and white robe with a dragon motif on the chest, and a tall court cap. The brothers are gathered below, with Umeomaru glowering back at him, his red stage makeup giving him a striking appearance, and Matsuomaru staring down unhappily. Wonderfully expressive figures and attractive color in this handsome design.
