Series; The Sixty-odd Provinces of Great Japan

The Sixty-odd Provinces of Great Japan - Around 1845, Kuniyoshi and Toyokuni III collaborated on a series depicting historic men and women or popular kabuki characters for each of the sixty-odd provinces of Japan. These great designs feature large, expressive figures by Kuniyoshi and Toyokuni III, with an inset of a related scene done by various students. Beautifully printed with attractive color and fine bokashi shading, these bold, dramatic images are a terrific choice for a collector interested in the history and legends of Japan.

Higo Province: Chinzei Hachiro Tametomo - Handsome portrait of the great warrior Chinzei Hachiro Tametomo, also known as Minamoto no Tametomo, a famed archer. He looks up with a frown, dressed in a gray kimono with horizontal patterned bands, his hands at his sides. A young sword bearer kneels beside him, smiling happily as he hold his master's weapon upright. The inset at upper right shows a courtesan tying a yellow sash around her waist. A large basket stands on the porch beside her, and cherry blossoms frame the blue sky. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. A nicely detailed design.
