Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
The Twelfth Month of 1877

Comments - Dramatic scene from the Satsuma Rebellion of rebel samurai fighting under the direction of their leader, Saigo Takamori, who can be seen at center right riding a gray horse. Samurai battled with spear and sword, some on foot and others on horseback. At lower left, one man grabs the hair of a fallen enemy, while above him, a warrior swings a large iron club, knocking down an opponent. Most unusually, at upper right, a hot air balloon carrying members of the Imperial Army drifts above landscape. At top center, red flames and orange smoke rise from a burning castle. A fascinating image, nicely detailed with burnishing in the black uniforms.
