Girls' Day and Doll Festival - Beautiful Chikanobu triptych of Girls' Day festivities at Chiyoda Palace. Traditionally, Girls' Day involved praying for the health and happiness of daughters as well as the display of hina dolls at the homes of Japanese girls. At left, a large tiered display holds rows of dolls representing the Emperor and Empress and members of the court, along with offerings, with a crowd kneeling below. At right, ladies-in-waiting escort a young princess to view the dolls, leading her by the hand. Detailed with embossing in the white kimono trim and burnishing in the black kimono and obi. A lovely design and a fine choice for a collector interested in Japanese festivals or hina dolls.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 28 5/8"
