Saigo Takamori's Last Battle at Shiroyama, 1877

Comments - Fantastic scene from the Satsuma Rebellion of rebel leader Saigo Takamori's last battle at Shiroyama. At right, one of the rebels supports him as he collapse into a waiting palanquin, still giving directions to the man reporting to him. In the center, a rebel general gestures with his sword as the Imperial Army troops advance, with soldiers and samurai engaged in close combat as officers on horseback follow. Rain slants across the dark night sky, pine trees filling the background. A dramatic image with expressive figures, beautifully detailed.
