Yoshitsune and His Nineteen Loyal Retainers, circa 1836

Comments - Terrific triptych of the great Minamoto leader Yoshitsune with his nineteen loyal retainers in traveling in his ship. The warrior monk Benkei stands in the prow, keeping a lookout for enemies and holding a naginata upright, his monk's mantle wrapped about his head. White-capped waves crash against side of the ship and tassels and banners flutter in the wind. A fantastic woodblock with beautiful color and a great choice for a samurai enthusiast. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
