Seven Grasses of Autumn, 1857

Comments - Attractive scene of kabuki actors posing against a backdrop of autumn grasses and blossoms. At right, a beauty looks over her shoulder with a rather surprised smile at a crouching man holding a bundle wrapped in red plaid cloth, a gourd container hanging over his back. She wears a blue gray kimono patterned with chrysanthemums and flowing water over a red under robe, tied with an olive green and black brocade obi and a narrow yellow sash. Her hair is simply styled in a single loop, adorned with a plain hairpin, and she holds a folding fan. Her companion looks up at her with an unhappy grimace. The background is shaded from mauve to gray, with handsome wood grain impression. A nice design.
