47 Ronin, Act 3: The Rear Gate, 1862

Comments - Handsome scene from Act 3 of the "Kanadehon Chushingura," which takes place at the rear gate of the palace. Ashamed at being unable to prevent his master, Lord Hangan, from quarreling with Lord Moronao, Kampei decides to elope with his sweetheart, the beauty Okaru. She looks back over her shoulder at him with a gentle smile as she carries his swords. She has already pinned a protective cloth around her hairstyle in preparation for traveling to her parents' house in the country. In the center, Kampei seems agitated, leaning forward and reaching for his weapons, while at right, a guard prevents another samurai from restraining them. Nice expressive figures with fine detail in the fabric patterns.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 28 7/8" + margin as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. Slight paper remnants on reverse from previous backing. A few small holes, repaired. Slight soiling, a few light stains and creases, paper slightly rippled. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
