Enjoying the Cool Evening Breezes, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene of three men enjoying the cool evening breezes on an autumn night. The young samurai at left looks over his shoulder with a slightly worried smile, a folding fan in hand. He wears a gray kimono patterned with butterflies caught in spider webs. The commoner in the center carries a small wooden chest tied to a rope over his back. His blue and white cotton kimono is tucked up at the waist for easier traveling, and he holds a dotted towel. The fellow at right scowls back at him angrily, his brows furrowed. His folding fan is delicately shaded from green to blue, with embossed fold lines. Blossoming flowers and autumn grasses fill the background beneath the darkening sky. From left, the actors are Ichimura Uzaemon XII, Ichikawa Danjuro, and Sawamura Chojuro V. An attractive design, nicely detailed and shaded.
