Series; Reports of the Heroines of Kagoshima

Beauty Navigating Defenses, 1877 - Terrific depiction of a beauty navigating her way through defenses during the Satsuma Rebellion. Carrying a sleeping child on her back, she clenches a short sword between her teeth, pausing to look back as she stretches a length of rope out before her in preparation for cutting it. A bullet streaks diagonally across the scene as she works, and gusts of wind sweep across the night sky. The barrier is made up of sharpened bamboo poles tied together, with a noise maker to serve as an alarm dangling at center right. A fascinating image from this extremely rare Chikanobu series depicting the brave women involved in the battles at Kagoshima.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 9 5/8" + margins as shownv
