Night Attack at Horikawa Palace

Comments - Terrific scene of Minamoto no Yoshitsune fighting off Tosa-bo Shoshun's attack on Horikawa Palace, where Yoshitsune had sought refuge from his brother, Yoritomo. The young nobleman balances one foot atop the railing of the palace verandah, drawing back his bow to fire an arrow. At left, Yoshitsune's wife, Tomoe gozen, kneels beside him, holding up his quiver. The battle continues in the courtyard below, with samurai fighting on horseback and on foot. A purple drapery featuring the paulownia crest of the Minamoto Clan frames the scene, with a silvery full moon shining in the night sky. A great design with lively color and a nicely detailed setting.
