Series; Thirty-six Modern Restaurants, 1878

Thirty-six Modern Restaurants - Kunichika's 1877 - 1878 series "Thirty-six Modern Restaurants" depicts beauties at popular restaurants in different locations. Women are shown serving a meal, relaxing in the garden or on a verandah, or arriving or leaving a teahouse. These colorful designs are nicely detailed with handsome interior and exterior settings showing an interest in Western perspective. An attractive Meiji era beauty series, seldom seen.

Writing a Poem Slip - Charming image of a beauty on the verandah of a restaurant, taking a brush in hand to write a poem slip. She smiles as she sits in a green wooden armchair, a companion standing before her. The view overlooks a large arched wooden bridge, with pedestrians making their way across the structure. Rooftops can be seen in the distance, with a pink glow spreading along the horizon as the sun sets. Nice architectural detail and vibrant color.
