Duel on the Shore, 1893

Comments - Terrific depiction of two samurai fighting on the shore, the warrior at left losing his balance and leaning to the side after his shoulder plate is torn loose by his enemy at right. The blade of his sword breaks into pieces, falling on the beach as he keeps an eye on his attacker. The samurai at right holds the armor in his hand, gripping his naginata at his side, tensed and ready to spring into action. He wears a fine suit of armor over a red brocade kimono and pants, a horned helmet, and furry black shoes. Pine trees frame a view of the water, with a fleet of ships at left with banners fluttering, and waves lapping at the sand. A fantastic image with beautiful color and detail, and a striking composition. Includes burnishing in the armor and fine bokashi shading in the setting.

Artist - Nobukazu (1874 - 1944)
