Series; Biographies of Valiant Drunken Tigers, 1874

Biographies of Valiant Drunken Tigers - Yoshitoshi's 1874 series "Biographies of Valiant Drunken Tigers" illustrates warriors who supported the Tokugawa Shogunate during the civil wars leading to the restoration of the Meiji Emperor. These bold portraits include samurai in the midst of battle, swinging swords or facing bullets, or in quieter moments, posing in armor or bloodied after a fierce fight. They are carefully drawn with realistic and often gory detail, conveying a sense of the action and the violence of the war. A great Yoshitoshi warrior series, rarely seen in the market.
