Akechi Mitsuhide Escaping across Lake Biwa

Comments - Terrific depiction of the treacherous warrior Akechi Mitsuhide escaping after his defeat at the Battle of Yamazaki by Hideyoshi's forces. He is shown riding his horse across Lake Biwa, brandishing his sword in one hand as the animal swims through the deep water, sending up splashes of white foam. The famous Pine Tree at Karasaki can be seen at left, the ancient branches propped up on silts. Hideyoshi's troops line the rocky shore, watching as he makes his way through the undulating waves. A fantastic design with a wonderful setting, detailed with a spattering of gofun (white pigment) to indicate the spray of the water.

Artist - Yoshikazu (active circa 1850 - 1870)

Image Size - 14 3/8" x 29 1/8"
