Catching Fireflies by the Sumida River, 1853

Comments - Great depiction of kabuki actors relaxing along the shore of the Sumida River on a summer night, enjoying the evening cool. At left, a beauty uses a folding fan to catch the fireflies fluttering in the sky as her companions watch. In the center, a beauty has just poured a cup of sake for a man, while at upper right, two fellows with worried expressions engage in conversation, one resting his arm around the other's shoulder. The left panel includes Bando Shoka I and Arashi Rikan II. The center panel features Suketakaya Takasuke III, Ichikawa Danjuru VIII, Onoe Kikujiru II. The right panel shows Ichikawa Kodanji IV, Bandu Takesaburu I, Otani Tomomatsu I, Iwai Kumesaburu III. A great image of a favorite summer activity in Edo.
