Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Sumo Wrestling Match, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Great depiction of a sumo wrestling match underway. The two athletes face off in the center of the ring, each holding his hands out as they jockey for position. The fellow at left grimaces as he lunges to the side, the fringe of his belt swinging as he moves. A judge sits solemnly on a cushion at left, his arms folded across his chest and tucked into the sleeves of his jacket. At right, the referee watches the wrestlers closing, his fan in hand. A terrific, bold depiction of this ancient Japanese sport.
