Original Hiroshige (1797 - 1858) Japanese Woodblock Print
Sakanoshita, circa 1850

Series; Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido (Reisho Tokaido)

Sakanoshita, circa 1850 - Beautiful view along the Tokaido Road at Sakanoshita, with a huge mountain at right looming above a rushing river. Travelers make their way along the path, two women pilgrims pausing to admire the spectacular scenery. At left, a man carries a mask of Sarudahiko, the god of the road, on his back, while at right, a kamuso or wandering monk wears a basket hat. The slopes are dotted with pine trees, with distance mountains shaded in gray along the horizon. A fantastic original Hiroshige from his Marusei or Reisho Tokaido series done around 1850. Prints from the Reisho Tokaido are extremely rare as all the blocks from the set were destroyed by fire shortly after completion, so very few impressions were made. A handsome design with attractive color and fine bokashi shading. We rarely come across woodblocks from the Reisho series, so if this image appeals to you, bid now!
