Evening Cool at Shijo-Kawara, 1849

Comments - Handsome scene of actors offstage enjoying the evening cool at Shijo-Kawara in Kyoto. Dressed in boldly patterned summer cotton kimono, the men exchange unhappy glances as they watch the fellow at right gesturing angrily with his pipe. A beauty stands behind him, smiling sweetly, wearing a kimono shaded from violet to pink with a design of arrow fletches. They are gathered along the rocky shore of the river, with teahouses lining the opposite bank and platforms built out over the water where patrons relax. Beyond the rooftops of the city, low clouds drift before a row of mountains in gray silhouette, and a yellow glow sun spreads across they sky as the sun sets. The actors in the center panel include Kataoka Ichizo I, Ichikawa Danjuro VIII, and Onoe Shinshichi III. The actors in the right panel include Arashi Kichisaburo III and Nakayama Ichizo I. A terrific design with expressive figures, wonderful detail, and fine bokashi shading.
