Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Attack during the Sino-Japanese War

Comments - Handsome illustration of Japanese troops attacking the Chinese outside a fortress during the Sino-Japanese War. At left, an officer takes a position on a slope beneath a pine tree, waving his sword and his hand as he urges his men forward. Soldiers with bayonets fixed run past him to join the men already surging through the narrow path between rocky cliffs, meeting the Chinese head on. Many of the enemies have already turned to flee. The cliffs from a view of the ocean beyond, where Japanese ships fire on the fort, shots exploding in gray puffs of smoke above the walls. A dynamic composition, nicely drawn and shaded.
